The extra games of the Odyssey

 

In addition to the 12 games provided with the Odyssey, customers could purchase extra games. They were sold individually or by packs of 6, and were available either at Magnavox retailers or by mail order. Game packs were packed in a special carton box. Each game was packed in a rectangular box containing the accessories. Most games used the cartridges provided with the Odyssey console, but a few required an additional cartridge. Customers could also register the purchase of their Odyssey to get a free bonus game called Percepts (model 1TL 802).

Although only ten extra games were released, there is an amazing detail to notice. Each game box has a reference starting with 982329 and followed by a number between 1 and 15. Because each box has a unique number, it is believed that 15 boxes were planned. Boxes referenced 982329-8 to 982329-12 are still unknown, and could have been reserved for games planned but never released. Another possibility is that these unknown boxes correspond to foreign games not yet discovered, but this is certainly not something to consider.

The export version of the Odyssey contained a SOCCER game, which replaced the FOOTBALL game provided with US Odyssey consoles. It is not known whether this game was sold separately in the USA, though no specimens were found outside of export Odyssey consoles.

Finally, one could wonder why cartridge #11 remains unknown. It was originally planned for the Basketball game. For some reasons, Magnavox dropped the cartridge and used cartridge #8 instead. Thus, Handball and Basketball use the same cartridge.
